Gabe and I are barely moving, but we did open our presents today. Alex had a great time. Thank goodness we have great neighbors. Two of them brought food over. We are not cooking today. The little bit of energy we do have is going toward keeping up with Alex.

Today we studied Russian Christmas traditions and I made a Russian Christmas Coffee Cake.

Russian Christmas Coffee Cake - a Christmas Morning Treat

Ingredients:
1 cup sugar
1/2 lb. butter (or margarine)
1 pint sour cream
3 unbeaten eggs
2 1/2 cups flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda

Filling and Topping
3/4 cup sugar
4 tablespoons cinnamon
1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans

Preparation: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (180 degrees C). Cream together sugar and margarine. Mix in the sour cream. Add the unbeaten eggs, one at a time. In a separate bowl mix the flour, baking powder, and baking soda. Combine the flour mixture gradually into the butter/egg mixture. The dough will become stiff. Spoon half the dough into a well-greased and floured 10-inch tube pan. Mix together the topping ingredients: sugar, cinnamon, and nuts. Sprinkle 3/4 of the topping/filling over the first half of the dough. Add the remaining dough and sprinkle rest of topping. Bake 1 hour at 350 degrees. Cool 1 hour before removing from the pan.

Gabe added some finishing touches to our outdoor lights today. Alex also watched Santa Buddies. He recently started watching TV and is never really that interested in what is on. He would much rather play with his toys or read a book. However, he LOVES Santa Buddies. We had to turn it off after 20 minutes. This is the first time we have had to actually enforce the 20 minute limit.

web-web-P1070343.JPG

UPDATE: Santa Buddies is still interesting, but now he treats it like all of the rest of the TV shows. He watches a couple minutes and then plays.

Tonight we went to the Winterhaven Festival of Lights. It is a neighborhood that goes all out with their Christmas decorations. The really nice thing, well for the visitors at least, is the streets are blocked off by police and you can take a leisurely stroll down the streets to look at the lights. Alex really liked the lights.

I also made Pumpkin Upside Down Cake for Gabe to take to the potluck at work. Everyone seems to really love this recipe. I, however, am not a fan.

Pumpkin Upside Down Cake

1 (15 oz.) can pumpkin
1 (12 0z.) can evaporated milk
1 cup sugar
3 eggs
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 (2 layer yellow cake mix)
1 cup pecans chopped
1 cup butter melted
8 oz. cream cheese, softened
1 cup sugar
12 oz. whipped topping (cool whip)

Line a 9 X 13 baking pan with waxed paper. Combine the pumpkin, evaporated milk, 1 cup sugar, eggs and cinnamon in a bowl and mix well. Pour into the prepared pan. Sprinkle the cake mix over the pumpkin mixture. Sprinkle the pecans over the cake mix. Drizzle the butter over the layers. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour. Cool in pan. Invert onto a flat service.

Combine the cream cheese, 1 cup sugar and cool whip in a bowl and mix well. Spread over the top of the cake. Chill for 1 to 2 hours or longer.

Today Alex and I made Fudgy Oatmeal Cookies. There are a lot of variations of this recipe out there, but this is the first time I have made the version with peanut butter. Jimmy and I used to make a version of these quite often.

2 C sugar
1/2 C milk
1/4 lb butter (one stick)
3 T cocoa
1/4 t salt
1 t vanilla

There is a program called Holiday Mail for Heroes and it is sponsored by the Red Cross. Basically, individuals or groups send cards to a P.O. Box and then the cards are distributed to service members, families, or veterans across the United States and abroad. We sent cards to the three featured kids over at Make A Child Smile. Most of the children on the website have medical issues that they will not recover from. If you have a couple of spare minutes, I encourage you to write out a card or three. I also encourage you to read the "DOs and DON'Ts" section in "Frequently Asked Questions". There are a lot of helpful tips like don't send candy due to allergies, don't send glitter, don't say "get well soon", do send cheery mail, do tell a story.

I made yummy oatmeal-raisin cookies today. The recipe makes rather large cookies.

The recipe is adapted from The America's Test Kitchen: Family Cookbook.

Oatmeal-Raisin Cookies
Makes 20 large cookies

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
16 tablespoons (2 sticks) unsalted butter softened
1 cup packed light brown sugar (I used dark)
1 cup granulated sugar
2 large eggs
3 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
1 1/2 cups raisins

1. Preheat over to 325 degrees with racks at the upper and lower middle position. Mix first four ingredients together and set aside.

2. Beat the butter and sugars together in a large bowl with an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy (about 3 to 6 minutes). Next, beat in eggs one at a time until combined (about 30 seconds).

3. With the mixer on low, add the flour until combined (about 30 seconds). Mix in oats and raisins.

4. Divide the dough into fourths and form balls (five from each quarter of dough). Place them on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet 2 1/2 inches apart and lightly flatten them with your palm. Bake for 22 to 25 minutes (rotating and switching the baking sheets halfway through baking). The cookies should be lightly golden with soft and puffy centers.

5. Cool the cookies on the baking sheet for 10 minutes and then transfer to a cooling rack until completely cool.

Sorry no picture, they didn't last that long.

My Spin on 25 Days of Christmas & December 1

Along the lines of Ali Edward's 25 Days of Christmas, I am doing my own spin on the idea. I have a scrapbook with one page for the first 25 days in December. I am going to add one photo or item for each day. To help this project along we are going to do one holiday related activity everyday in December. Some must be done on certain days (ex., open Christmas presents) and some can be done on any day in December (ex., learn about Christmas traditions in another country). I am pretty excited about this little project. At a minimum, I will try to post our activities on a weekly basis. I have also been considering going back and adding activities since Thanksgiving because I couldn't wait to put up the tree and Alex has already had his picture taken with Santa.

Our activity for today was going to Zoo Lights and having our picture made with Santa. Alex loves to look at all of the Christmas lights. He was really excited to have his picture made with Santa until he saw the little girl in front of us sit on Santa's lap. He started crying. So, we have a family Santa picture this year.

Today we opened our presents. Alex received a lot of great gifts. He especially likes his slide and swing, his bike, and rolling his cars around the floor. Santa rides around our neighborhood in a firetruck on Christmas morning and hands out candy canes, but Alex was taking a nap and he missed it. Around 2:30 p.m. we stopped off at the R's house (our neighbors) to say hi. Around 3:30 p.m. we went to Kevin's house.

Today we went to story time at the library. Alex had a lot of fun once he settled in. Before we headed out to the library, we watched Rudolph. Later on in the evening, we read The Night Before Christmas and then we read the Christmas Story (Luke 2:1-18). Everyone received new PJ's and we made cookies for Santa. After Alex went to bed, Gabe and I started putting toys together.

Gabe, Alex, and I drove around our neighborhood looking at Christmas lights. There are quite a few houses that we have nicknamed "the Griswold's". Gabe and I came back and watched How the Grinch Stole Christmas

We made hand print mitten ornaments today. I painted Alex's hands (one red and one green) while Gabe held on to them. We actually did all of this one hand at a time and we stopped to wash his hands in between hand prints. We pressed his hand onto a white foam sheet. I drew a mitten shape around each hand print freehand and cut it out. I glued some ribbon on the back and also wrote "Alex 2009" with a marker. Finally, they made it to the Christmas tree. If I were doing this again, I would probably paint both hands green and stay away from the red paint. Cotton balls would look cute on the bottom of the mitten, but I chose white for the mitten, so it didn't look that great with white on white.

I realize that our ornaments are pretty crowded on the tree right now. This is because the bottom portion of the tree is no longer considered usable space since it is within Alex's reach. So, the bottom four feet of ornaments have been relocated to the top portion of the tree.

Today we delivered the Christmas candy to most of our neighbors. I went to a party at a local restaurant. It was a lot of fun and there was gift exchange. I came home with a really cute snowman. Alex loves to watch him (he changes colors).

Today we purchased some formula to donate to a shelter. They have several new babies and formula is a really big expense for them. Next we went to the Fourth Avenue Winter Street Fair. We walked around the fair and had dinner at Magpies. After dinner we walked to the Parade of Lights route, had a seat, and waited on the parade to begin. The parade was a lot longer than I expected. It was around an hour and a half. Alex liked watching the lights, but he especially liked the trucks. Of course, Santa made an appearance at the end of the parade.

December 11

Today we donated toys to the toy drive at Gabe's office. He is actually in charge of the event and I always (well, since last year when we moved here) make the ornaments that hang on the tree. They are simple little circles in different colors with an age, gender, and gift on the tag. There is always a practical gift listed on the tag as well. For example, the word "toy" will be on the tag along with either "socks" or "soft lunch box". Something that is needed along with something that is wanted. I guess it is more than just a "toy drive", because things are purchased for adults too.

I am participating in an online cookie exchange over at The Mom Creative. Check out my recipe here.

On an unrelated topic, our new kitchen table is going to be delivered today. I am pretty excited about it. Also, our friend, Kevin, is coming over for dinner tonight. I am going to make fajitas...yummy! I think we will have some strawberry ice cream for dessert. Gabe and I made it in our ice cream maker. We have also tried the vanilla, but so far the strawberry is my favorite.

I also finished The Shack. It is an interesting book. It managed to keep my interest and keep me thinking. I was always wondering what was going to happen next.

December 10

Today's daily December project was sending care packages to deployed troops. You can do it too! Just go to the Any Soldier website and click on Where to Send. A list of soldiers will show up on the left of the screen. I chose to sort by the number of times that the address had been requested and chose to send packages to two of the individuals that had the least number of requests. The packages are distributed to a soldier in the group that does not get a lot of mail, however, all of the contents are shared. They also have little websites where they can enter special requests.

Some of the items that we sent were zip lock bags, hand sanitizer (in a zip lock bag), hot chocolate, mac and cheese, word search books, pens, water flavor packets, candy canes, smarties, DVDs (not all groups have DVD players), frisbee, baby wipes, and some other odds and ends. Basically whatever I could stuff into a priority box. If you use the military flat rate box (and you are sending the package to an APO, etc.) you get $2.00 off of the large flat rate priority mail box rate. If we send a package again, I think I am going to fill a box with canned goods, then I will really get my monies worth on the shipping. Technically our packages were for Any Marine. Any soldier goes to all branches of the service, or you can select a specific branch like I did.

Today our Christmas activity was to learn how another country celebrates Christmas. We chose the United Kingdom. In addition to learning about the traditions of the the UK, we made crackers, and Victoria Sandwich Cake.

Today we mailed our Christmas Cards. I decided to take them to the post office since a couple of them needed international postage (Canada and Greece...you know who you are). The cards have been finished for a while now minus a few details that came in the mail yesterday. So, I was finally able to mail them today.

December 7

We had two Christmas activities today, but one of them was sort of a continuation of yesterday. First, we sent cards to the three featured kids over at Make A Child Smile. Most of the children on the website have medical issues that they will not recover from. If you have a couple of spare minutes, I encourage you to write out a card or three. We included a picture of our dogs in the cards and I wrote a little story about them. I also encourage you to read the "DOs and DON'Ts" section in "Frequently Asked Questions". There are a lot of helpful tips like don't send candy due to allergies, don't send glitter, don't say "get well soon", do send cheery mail, do tell a story.

I bought contact paper, so our second activity was to make the ornament that I had planned for Alex yesterday. I placed a piece of contact paper, with the backing removed, on the floor. I gave Alex a pile of pieces of scrap paper and I let him adhere them to the contact paper. The idea was for him to cover the entire piece of contact paper. Since he didn't, I placed the contact paper on another sheet of white paper. I then cut out an ornament shape, added ribbon, and placed it on the tree. You can find the ornament pattern here.

Ornaments

web-P1010572.JPG
Snowman Ornament.

I saw something similar to this at the mall and decided to come home and recreate it. It is really easy. Paint a popsickle stick white and let it dry. Cut out a hat and glue it on the stick. Use sharpies to "paint" the eyes, mouth, buttons, and carrot nose. You could use paint if you wanted, but I thought using a sharpie was pretty easy. Finally, I added the ribbon scarf and hanger. Oh, I also wrote "Alex 2009" on the back even though I pretty much made this one on my own. He did choose the ribbon.

web-P1010574.JPG
Santa Hat Ornament.

The idea for this ornament came from a website and I cannot find it. If it was your website I was looking at, let me know. I would love to give you credit for your idea.

To make the Santa ornament simply paint three popsicle sticks red and allow them to dry. Glue them together in the shape of a triangle. Next, I glued cotton balls onto the sticks to make the "fur" on Santa's hat. Next I attached a picture and placed a triangle shaped piece of red paper over the back of the ornament. I glued a ribbon to hang the ornament and wrote "Alex 2009" on the back with a sharpie.

I also really like the idea for this Santa ornament here. And this reindeer idea is cute too. Maybe we should try a snowflake ornament. So many cute ornament ideas.

December 6

Today we each sent a postcard through Let's Say Thanks. You can do it too! It is easy and free. Just select the postcard you would like to send, choose a message or write your own, and hit send. Xerox prints the postcards and sends them to deployed troops. It only takes a second to send one or even more.

We also made some Christmas ornaments. I did most of the prep work, but Alex glued the cotton balls to the popsicle stick.

I actually had a more age appropriate ornament activity planned, but I could not find the contact paper.

December 5

Today was a pretty busy day. We went to the Pecan Festival. It was actually more entertaining than we thought it would be. I really liked the parking lot. Instead of gravel, they used pecan shells as a covering. What a creative use!

web-P1000493.JPG

Next we headed to Toys R Us. We dropped off our Toys for Tots donations. Alex has both of the toys that we donated and he really likes playing with them. So hopefully they are good ones. December 6 is the last day to drop off toys at Toys R Us, but you can always make a donation online.

web-P1000483.JPG
I have a picture of Alex and the Marine, but I didn't ask permission to post the picture and I haven't blurred the Marine out of the picture yet.

Our next stop was the mall. We had to mail his letter to Santa at Macy's. Macy's will donate $1.00 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation for each letter collected.

web-P1000498.JPG
Dropping off the letter to Santa.

We came back home to get ready for the Christmas party that we went to tonight. It was fun. I don't have any pictures right now. I did take my camera, but our friend was taking pictures with his fancy camera, so I am just going to get copies of his photos. He is also the same guy that ended up taking pictures for Alex's first birthday party.

So, I realize that we completed more than one Christmas activity today, but it is just how things worked out.

December 4

We made a gingerbread house today. Alex ran around having a good time. I don't remember our previous gingerbread houses taking so long. Or, maybe we just didn't follow the directions. When we started "gluing" the pieces together with icing we realized we had to wait 2-3 hours. After waiting, we started "gluing" again and then began waiting an hour. Next, we finally began decorating. There you have it, our Christmas activity for the day.

I picked up the new book for the book club this month. The selection is An Idiot Girl's Christmas: True Tales from the Top of the Naughty List by Laurie Notaro. I have not started to read it yet. I am in the middle of The Shack by William P. Young and about 50 pages into I, Alex Cross by James Patterson. I will start read the book club book soon. I usually read multiple books at a time anyway.

Tonight we went to Zoo Lights. The animals are all sleeping and away, but the zoo is decorated with a lot of lights and other decorations. There are photo opportunities with a lot of decorations and even a lion Santa. We went tonight because it was one of the members preview nights and admission was free. I was a little disappointed that I didn't bring our Toys for Tots donations with us. I guess I can just drop them off at Toys R Us, but there were two Marines at the entrance collecting toys. I guess I will know to bring the toys with me next year. Anyway, it was a lot of fun and there was live music and hot chocolate. I think it is something that we will do again next year.

Christmas Tree Napkins

There is a little independently owned quilt shop the next town over. They carry designer fabrics that you can't buy at places like Wal-Mart or Jo-Ann's. The ladies there are always really helpful and freely give away patterns. One of my favorite patterns is for Christmas Tree napkins. These are super simple to make. One napkin takes two fat quarters (one each of two different materials). If you would like six napkins, you will need two yards of material (one yard each of two different materials). To get six napkins out of a yard of material requires a little finesse, but you can do it!

This is a little hard to explain, but if you have a circle that is 20 inches in diameter (across the center of the circle) and you cut it in half, you have the shape that you need for the napkin. Cut out half circles of both of the materials and sew them right sides together. Make sure and leave a space to turn the material right side out. I left my opening on the straight side of the material.

web-P1040954.JPG

Turn the material right side out and press. Use the step-by-step pictures below to fold the material into a Christmas Tree shape. Once you have the shape you desire, iron the napkin again.

web-P1040955.JPG

web-P1040956.JPG

web-P1040957.JPG

Next, sew a straight stitch down the folded crease from the iron. This will allow you to know where to fold your napkin to get a Christmas Tree shape after washing. Cute and simple! Enjoy!

Depending on which way you fold your material, you can get a different look from the same napkin.

The ladies at the quilt shop said they use non-Christmas material to make these napkins and use them all year. I sort of like the Christmas Tree aspect myself.

So, day 1 is already scrapbooked and in the album. There is a program called Holiday Mail for Heros and it is sponsored by the Red Cross. Basically, individuals or groups send cards to a P.O. Box and then the cards are distributed to service members, families, or veterans across the United States and abroad. There is still time to participate in this program, but you must do it soon because the deadline is quickly approaching. For more information, visit the Red Cross.

Ornament Exchange

I am participating in two ornament exchanges online. One is over at An Island Life and the other is through The Benner Daily. I am really looking forward to both giving and receiving ornaments.

Christmas Pillows

Our front room needed a punch of color for the holidays, so I decided to cover the brown pillows on our brown chairs. Don't get me wrong, I love both the brown pillows and the brown chairs, but I want to brighten them up a little bit for the holiday season.

web-P1000106.JPG
Brown chair with brown pillow.

web-P1000107.JPG
Brown chair with Christmas "Package" Pillow.

These are really easy to make. Cover your pillow with your choice of material. My cover is removable since I am only going to be using the package pillows for about a month out of the year. I used a burgundy, but if you are happy with the color of your pillows, just skip this step and go right to the ribbon.

Next, using ribbon, wrap your pillow up like a package and tie with a bow. I used 3 yards of ribbon for each pillow, but the amount of ribbon needed (as well as material to cover your pillow) will vary depending on the size of the pillow. So, make sure and measure ahead of time.

If you don't want to sew a cover, you could literally wrap your pillow in the material and use the ribbon to hold everything together.

web-P1000108.JPG
Pillow closeup.

web-P1000122.JPG

Gabe even made a comment that they look like $50 pillows. The cost was around $6.00 with $4.00 of that being ribbon. If I would have waited, our grocery store had the ribbon for $2.00, but I never thought to shop for ribbon at our grocery store. Oh well. I am pleased with the way that they turned out. My photography skills just don't do the pillows justice. Oh, and yes, that is a pumpkin.

Finished Quilt

I picked up the new book for my book club today. We are going to read The Master Butchers Singing Club. I still have about 200 pages left of The Lost Symbol. I have to finish it by Tuesday, then I will start on the book club book selection.

Today was shot day for Alex. So, he is pretty tired and went to bed at 7:00 p.m. Usually his bedtime is 8:00 p.m. Since he went to bed so early, Gabe and I picked up the house and watched some TV. I finished my Grandma's quilt for Christmas. I am almost done with my Christmas shopping. I still need to order something for one of my nephews and make two presents for my brother. I am waiting on a picture to finish my brother's gifts.

Christmas Present

So, the allergy shots weren't so bad. I did think I was only going to get one per week. Turns out I get three at each visit. I do have a slight headache, but that could be from anything.

Since I already did our workout I have had a couple of hours to myself. Alex is in bed and Gabe is doing Kenpo. I decided to work on a Christmas present or two. I completed one, but I love it and I decided I am going to keep it. It is was for my sister. I will just go to the fabric store and buy some more of the same fabric and make her one too. I started on four more presents. I can't finish them though. I am missing something. Once I obtain the missing ingredient I can finish them up in no time. I will take plenty of pictures and show you all of the Christmas presents in December or early January.

I think I am going to get ready for bed. Tomorrow I just have to go to the book club meeting, do some laundry, and pack for our trip. Not too bad. Maybe I will be able to work in a Christmas present or two.

July 17, 2009

This & That

I have a medium length list of things on my to do list that I do not want to do. So, similar to Karen, I have decided to do one lingering item each day. One thing isn't that bad. I am happy to report that it has been very successful. Hopefully, very soon, I will have a really short list of things on my to do list.

I recently finished Everyone is Beautiful by Katherine Center. The main character is Lanie. She and her husband, Peter, pack everything and move across the country so he can pursue his dream. She finds herself somewhere along the way. This is not the type of book I usually read, but I gave it a shot. It turned out to be pretty good. Plus, there is a cupcake on the cover of the book. It can't be bad if there is a cup cake on the cover, right?

We rocked at the no spend challenge the first month (June). We found plenty of free or inexpensive things to do. We went to the zoo and since we are members, it was free (or prepaid...however you want to look at it). We watched a lot of movies. Our DVR is near capacity. We have been too busy to go out and do anything for the past month or so. However, we have had a lot of unexpected expenses. There is a conference that I will be attending soon and that took a huge chunk out of the budget. There are quite a few things that had to be pre-paid (registration, classes, hotel). There is another major expense, but I don't remember it. So, if you remove those two things from the budget for July, then we aren't doing half bad.

I have slowly been working on more Christmas presents. I completed 9 last night, but they were all the same thing. I need to update my spreadsheet pretty soon.

I decided to complete a few projects that I have wanted to do for a while now. I made us some luggage handle covers and I made myself a pin cushion.

I am giving a brief description of the steps that I followed to make the luggage handle covers. I made a very tiny change to the instructions from Little Birdie Secrets. Make sure and check out her awesome tutorial for the project. She has a lot of very easy to follow pictures.

Cut out two 6 x 6 1/2 pieces of fabric and one 6 x 6 1/2 piece of batting. Place the two right sides of the fabric together and then place the batting on top. Sew the fabric together (1/4" seam allowance), but make sure to leave a small opening so you can turn the material right side out.

Luggage Handle Cover 2.jpg
After turning the cover right side out, fold the material for the opening under and sew all the way around the cover (this is different from the tutorial on Little Birdie Secrets). Next, sew on the two pieces of 5" velcro so they match up. Place on your luggage. Now our black bags will stand out a little more. I used striped material so I had to match the lines up. If you use something with a random pattern then matching up lines won't be a problem.

Pin Cushion 2.jpg
Make sure and head over to Paper.String.Cloth for a great tutorial on how to make the cute little pin cushion. I followed the directions exactly. I like the look of the patchwork, but next time I might try a solid piece of material and see how that works out.

I think we might see Harry Potter this weekend. I am pretty excited. A lot of it depends on the weather. If it is still 100 or higher around 8:00 p.m. I doubt we will go. It is just too hot for Alex to sit out and watch a movie when it is that warm (we go to a drive-in).

Temperature.jpg
This was taken a few days ago. Can you read the temperature reading? It is 119! By the time we were back home it was only 111.

Back in AZ

We left my parents house around 12:30 p.m. to head for St. Louis. After driving to the airport, returning our rental car, checking in with the airlines, going through security, and finding our gate, we had a couple of hours before our flight. One nice thing about traveling with a baby is priority seating. We arrived at the Tucson airport around 11:30 p.m. The luggage arrived around midnight and we were home around 12:30 a.m. After bringing everything inside I managed to take a bath around 2:00 a.m. I think we finally went to sleep around 3:30 a.m.

We picked the dogs up from the kennel today. They are happy to be back home.

We are really hoping that Alex does not get sick. Maddex (Brandi - my niece's baby) is in the hospital. He is dehydrated, has pneumonia, strep throat, and if that isn't enough he also has an ear infection. Maddex is only 7 months old. Please say a prayer for his quick recovery.

Well, we have quite a few things to do today (we aren't going to get them all accomplished).

Baby Shower & BBQ

Yesterday, Gabe, my parents, Alex, and I went to lunch at 17th Street Bar & Grill. My mom had a few things to pick up in a town about a half an hour from where they live. She had a baby shower for some of our family members and friends. So, today we saw quite a few of my family members and a lot of them met Alex for the first time. We had a really yummy cake and cookies.

We came back to my parent's house and watched the Gridiron Gang. It is about a probation officer that decides to start a football team the inmates of the juvenile detention center. Some were in rival gangs. They all had to play together as a team. It was a great movie.

Everyone seems sick

On Christmas Eve we headed down to my parent's house. We celebrated my Dad's birthday at my brother's house. My sister and sister-in-law made dinner. Afterward we came back to my parent's house.

Christmas morning people came up for breakfast and we opened our ornament exchange gifts. My brother didn't come up for Christmas this year due to a severe illness that started after we left his house on Christmas Eve. I spoke with him today and he is still sick. We opened presents on Christmas Day and everyone went home. When people came back for dinner, Brandi's husband (Doug) did not come back up. He stayed home sick. While eating dinner Shane's son started throwing up. I am hoping that Alex does not get sick. It seems that everyone has whatever is currently going around. My Uncle Marty and his family also stopped by last night.

This morning my cousin, Kara Beth stopped by to see Alex. Gabe and I have been relaxing. The weather here is nicer than the weather was up north.

Arizona Christmas

We had our Christmas in Arizona tonight.

Me and my collection of books from Gabe.

We have to take the dogs to the kennel tomorrow. Unfortunately, we can't bring them with us to Illinois. The weather there is too cold for the dogs to transported in the winter and the summers in Arizona are too warm for them to fly out of Tucson. So, it looks like they will primarily be staying in the sunny state of Arizona.

We still aren't packed. I guess we will do it tomorrow. Our flight leaves on Saturday morning.

Goals

Alex did not have to get a shot on Wednesday. We decided to give it with the other shots at the 2 month appointment instead. Basically it is given with another shot, so if we had opted to have it at the 1 month appointment he would be getting and extra stick with the needle overall.

I managed to mail a couple of packages on Sunday. I believe the baby announcements were mailed on Sunday. I have been working on the Christmas cards and I believe I have around 7 left. Hopefully those will get mailed out today with the 6 packages that are hanging out in the family room.

So, my goals for today
1. Finish the Christmas Cards
2. Mail the 6 packages (at least 3 of them). Three go to the post office and three are UPS.
3. Pick up the entire house and Laundry.

My Goals for tomorrow.
1. Catch up on email.
2. Make a Menu
3. Grocery Shop

My Goals for Thursday
1. Update Magazine Addresses
2. Send my mom her recipes
3. Kohl's Cash (I apparently have $20)
4. Order Wedding present for a friend

We will see if I actually accomplish my goals. I will be really happy if I can get each day's goals completed. It is much harder to do things when Alex is awake.

I have to go to the dentist today...fun, fun, fun. That is going to be an adventure.

Oh, these packages that I am mailing require boxes and packing paper. The Christmas presents need boxes too. Well, when you move you have plenty of boxes and packing paper, right? Hmm...we threw ours out. The irony in the entire situation is we almost had to buy boxes and packing paper. I managed to scrounge some up from the packages that we have been receiving in the mail. I also started opening the boxes that managed to find their way into closest in search of packing paper. I found two sheets.

2Toots

Gabe and I are watching the American Idol season premier. So far we aren't too impressed, but we have managed to laugh a few times. I always feel guilty when I laugh at the individuals that aren't "American Idol" quality. It makes it worse when they actually think that they are great singers. At least they are up there on the stage auditioning.
Sunday Gabe and I went out to dinner at 2Toots. Get your minds out of the gutter...it is a restaurant with a train theme. There is a train that goes around the restaurant and the train brings the food around and stops when it gets to your table. The chicken sandwich was excellent. We actually found the restaurant while walking around downtown in Downer's Grove. We went downtown to look around and decided that we would find dinner while exploring. We relaxed in a cafe a while before heading home. Now we are back to work.

New Year

Happy 2008! To celebrate the new year we stayed home and had a great time. My brother and sister-in-law came up (they were taking their son to college) and Aaron came over. So, we all played Wii and watched Transformers. The movie was much better than I expected and I liked it. For those of you wondering, my cheeseball turned out great. We had a very yummy ice cream pie for Gabe's birthday. Yesterday we started taking down our Christmas tree. I think that we will finish it tonight. Some pictures that I ordered came in the mail today, so I think that I am going to work on our 2007 scrapbook today. It is already 2008, so I at least need to finish up 2007.

Back Up North

After work on Christmas Eve, yes, you did read it correctly...I worked on Christmas Eve, we headed to my parents. My Dad's birthday is Christmas Eve, so everyone was up at my parent's house celebrating when we arrived. On Christmas everyone came over and we exchanged ornaments during breakfast and opened our gifts afterward. We received a couple of neat gift cards. I really like a scrapbook for our dogs that I received. Gabe is ready to grill with some grilling supplies. He was pretty happy to get another fireproof safe. We have one, but it is full with important documents...we have a lot of documents. Too bad it isn't valuable stuff. He also received a Wii game that he has been wanting. I have and idea of what he will be doing while I am working and he is here alone. We had dinner later on and we drove back up North today. Things are mostly unpacked, but there are two rooms in our house that are a disaster...you guessed it, the rooms that have not been redone. We went to the grocery store and to Ikea. I bought some pillows, but I think that I might take them back and get some others. I haven't really decided what I am going to do with the den yet. Currently I am doing some laundry. I think that I might research a trip. The marathon of working every other day begins...

Christmas Stuff

Well, I haven't written anything for a while and we have been busy...so here it goes. Thursday morning I had an appointment with the dentist and Gabe worked. Gabe took half of a vacation day and after my appointment we left to go to Peoria to see Gabe's parents and sister for the holidays. We had lunch at Avanti's and then went to a green house. We all headed back to the house and met up with Laura (Gabe's sister)...she had been at work. We celebrated Christmas and then watched Ball's of Fury.
Friday we went to Cyd's for lunch and looked for Bald Eagles, but we didn't see any. We drove home and started doing things around the house again. I took a shower using my new gingerbread cookie scented bath wash. I smelled like a cookie and I considered taking a bite out of my arm :)
After work yesterday Aaron came over and we had dinner. Gabe made his stuffed mushrooms...they are one of my favorites! Gabe and I also celebrated our Christmas together yesterday evening.
This morning we woke up and the power was out. The beeping of our power supply sent Elsa into a seizure. This generally happens when the power goes out. I guess she likes her electricity (and hates the beeping noise). The power came back on and we started working on putting things away and finishing up Spain stuff. We now have a place to stay on every night of our trip. We have a few errands to run today...I will see if I can pull Gabe away from the Wii. I am really looking forward to watching some DVD's that I received for Christmas...maybe that can be on list for tonight.

Shopping

I am at work right now and things are little slow...don't worry, they are going to pick up pretty soon...I just looked at the schedule. I now have an internet connection via my cell phone thanks to Gabe. The connection isn't as fast as our DSL at home, but it is much better than nothing. Yesterday we went shopping in Schaumberg. I must say that this was a mistake and helped me to remember why I finish my Christmas shopping well before Christmas. The mall and the stores were extremely crowded and some of the lines to purchase items were almost out of the doors. I found a thing or two that I would have purchased if the lines weren't so dang long. I did manage to find something for our bedroom and the store only had two people in line in front of me!
Our bedroom is officially finished. So, before the end of the year our house checklist includes fixing the mirror in one of the upstairs bathrooms, some sanding of a wall, and replacing a kitchen faucet. Gabe said that he is going to replace the faucet while I am at work tonight. The rest of the things on our list are going to wait until next year. Actually there are only three rooms left that need work, but unfortunately they need a LOT of work. The den, a room without a purpose, and cleaning out the garage are all on the list for 2008.
As far as books go I have finished Double Cross by James Patterson. It is a very good book and I encourage everyone to read the Alex Cross series...they are one of my favorites. I also finished The Witness. It was pretty good. Worth the read if you are out of your favorite author. We started watching I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry. We are only half-way through the movie and I must say that it has had me laughing out loud several times. I am a fan of Adam Sandler and so far this one is pretty good. We will probably finish it tonight or tomorrow. The grocery store is on the list of things to do tonight...if we want to eat tomorrow.

Christmas Parties

Friday evening Gabe and I went to my office Christmas Party. It was at a sushi place called Tsukasa. It was very good. The party started at 8:00 p.m. and we closed down the place. We stayed until around midnight (they closed at 10:30 p.m.). The drive home was around an hour, so I was pretty tired for work on Saturday...and boy were we busy.
Yesterday (Saturday) night we went to Gabe's office's Christmas party. It was at Dave and Buster's. We all ate and then broke apart to play some games. Gabe and I played the Jurassic Park game (we played it last year too). This year we beat the entire game...hmmm...what are we going to play next year?
Friday we ripped up carpet and I started pulling staples out of the hardwood floor in our bedroom. Initially we were going to replace the flooring with another hardwood floor, but the condition is better than we expected, so we decided to keep the current floor. The trim has been replaced and most of the things are back in their respective places. There are a few small things that need to be done in both our bathroom and our bedroom. I almost think that this point of redoing a room is worse than working on major projects in the room. It bugs me when we are so close to completion, but there are a few minor things that still need to be done here and there. I can't officially mark it off of my list until EVERYTHING is done in the room.
Today we woke up early to go to Ikea for breakfast. Then we went to the "As Is" section and purchased a leather couch at a significant markdown ($328 off). We had been eying it for a couple of days.
After running errands we came back home and built a gingerbread house. Clara (one of our dogs) liked it when we dropped candy on the floor and ran around licking it up. It is well after midnight and I have to work tomorrow (or technically today), so I am going to bed.

12 Days of Christmas

The cost of the 12 days of Christmas items is up 4% from last year. It would cost $78,100 this year.

Leaves

We returned on Friday and unpacked a few things, watched Ugly Betty, and October Road. While I was at work on Saturday, Gabe worked on raking and packing the leaves. When I came home I helped him for a while and then we went downtown to the Christkindlmarket. Since 2003 I have been buying an ornament from the market. Gabe has been going with me since 2004. It is a lot of fun, but it was really crowded last night. Usually there aren't that many people there when we go. Gabe had a German Bratwurst. I had a chicken sandwich (I know wild and crazy me). We both shared some potato pancakes and a cherry strudel. We came back, put on our pj's, lit the fire, made hot cocoa, turned on the Christmas music, and put the ornaments on the tree. Our Santa Clause tree topper is missing in action. I think we are going to have to buy another one. I have to put some shoes on, the rest of the leaves are calling for us.

Comedies

On Thursday Aaron and I went to the movies to watch Fred Clause. I expected to be laughing out loud. That didn't really happen. I have been disappointed with comedies lately. I guess I have been building them up and then when I see them they just don't meet my expectations.
Friday I worked on wrapping presents. Gabe and I ate at Clara's. They have excellent bread.
Today while I was at work Gabe made space for my car in the garage. I am excited to be able to park in the garage. Now we just have to clean out the other half so we can park his vehicle in the garage too. I finished wrapping all of my Christmas presents today. I have been working on Christmas cards for a couple of days now. I need to print address labels...actually, I should be doing that now. Aaron came over tonight and we watched Shrek the Third. Again, I expected to be laughing out loud. I laughed a few times, but nothing like I expected. I still want to see I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry and License to Wed, but the video store was out of them both.

Gift Receipt

Saturday Gabe and I went to Meijer to grocery shop. We were using the self check lane and I was scanning and Gabe was bagging. I was entering the number for produce, but instead of hitting the "enter item number" button, I hit the gift receipt button. I started laughing and Gabe asked what was going on. I told him that we were getting a gift receipt for our $0.54 worth of bananas. He said it would be even funnier if he returned the bananas with the gift receipt and told them that he wanted apples.
Aaron came over Saturday evening and we watched Fracture. It was pretty good. Anthony Hopkins plays some pretty creepy characters.
Yesterday we did some shopping. We went to Lowe's. Oh, we bought a new Christmas tree at the American Sale. We don't get it until Wednesday. The majority of our ornaments are at my parent's house. I am really tired, but I have a lot to attempt to do tonight. I think that I am going to bed around 11:00 p.m.

On the way back to Chicago

Today we just hung out around the house with family. My sister, Kyle, Gabe, and I finished our card game and all I have to say is that Kyle didn't win. :) We are on our way back to Chicago. We left around 6:00 p.m. and we should be arriving around 12:00 a.m. I have a lot of things to accomplish tomorrow before going back to clinic on Tuesday.

Happy St. Patricks' Day!

Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone! Did anyone else notice that Chicago celebrated St. Patrick's Day a week early and then moved on to Easter? Before you know it, they will literally be celebrating Christmas in July!

Party Dogs

Gabe and I are having a tropical themed get together at our apartment. Since we don't know what the weather is going to be like in a couple of weeks we will bring to the tropics to us. Anyway, the point of this is that I just read an article on dogs and parties. There are apparently quite a few things that can be found at parties that one should not feed a dog.
Among them are coffee, chocolate, and tea. These can cause urinary tract problems as well as nervous system problems.
Macadamia nuts. These cause problems with digestive, nervous, and muscle systems.
Grapes and Raisins. These can cause kidney problems...Clara won't like this, raisins are her favorite food.
Tobacco poisoning can cause vomiting and Alcohol consumption can cause death.

Just thought that I would pass the information along.
